The function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine , convert it into thyroid hormone, thyroxine 74 and triiodothyronine T3.

Proper function of thyroid hormone is vital for metabolism. If thyroid hormone replacement is insufficient, metabolism slows down.

Every cell in the body depends on thyroid hormone for regulation of its metabolism. The normal thyroid gland produces about 80% T4 and 20% T3 hormone. T3 possesses four times the hormone strength at T4.

T3 is the more active hormone. Thyroid hormone replacement is traditionally done with T4, as the body is able to convert to T3.

However this conversion of T4 to T3 does not occur in some patients and this affects their metabolism, which slows down, affecting their ability to process food, their body temperature, ability to think, and energy levels. Therefore measurement of free T3 hormone levels is very important. Also, it is important to understand that every patient’s therapy will be different. Treatment plans are individualistic. Checking for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis,  treatment of leaky gut are both important in the complete management of thyroid disorders.
